The NDIS is a program in Australia that helps people with disabilities get the support they need. It’s designed to give individuals more control over their lives by providing funding for services and equipment tailored to their specific needs.
Here’s how it works: instead of relying solely on government-funded services, the NDIS gives people with disabilities a budget based on their individual requirements. This budget can be used to pay for things like therapy, personal care, equipment, and even help with finding a job.
One of the best things about the NDIS is that it focuses on each person’s goals and aspirations. Instead of offering a one-size-fits-all approach, it’s all about what the individual wants to achieve. Whether it’s learning new skills, becoming more independent, or participating in community activities, the NDIS is there to support those goals.
To access the NDIS, individuals need to meet certain eligibility criteria, including having a permanent disability that significantly impacts their daily life. Once approved, they work with NDIS planners to create a personalized plan outlining their needs and how they want to use their funding.
- You live in Australia, an Australian citizen, permanent resident OR hold a protected special category visa.
- You are aged between 0-65 (although already enrolled participants, once they turn 65, can choose either to continue with the NDIS or transfer to the aged care support system available to all Australians).
- You have a disability that is permanent OR likely to be permanent which has an impact on your functional capacity to communicate, move, interact socially, move safely around your home and the community, or manage your personal care.
- Early intervention requirements – you may be eligible if you need some supports now to reduce your future support needs or for your family to build their skills to help you.
NDIS offers financial assistance to eligible disabled individuals to help them become more independent, obtain new skills, and involve in employment activities, and at last, have their quality of life enhanced.
There are three support categories within NDIS Funding: core supports, capital supports and capacity building supports.
Core Support includes assistance that enables a person to do their daily life tasks.
Capital Support is for an investment such as funding for capital costs and improvement for equipment, home, or car.
Capacity building Support focuses on you. It is the combination of supports, services and resources you will require to develop your decision-making skills and become more independent.
Check if you’re eligible. You should be under 65, have a permanent disability, and be an Australian citizen or resident.
Gather papers like medical reports and assessments.
Contact the NDIS. Call them or go online to start.
They’ll schedule a meeting to talk about your needs.
Get ready for the meeting. Think about your goals and what help you need.
Attend the meeting and talk about your disability and what you need.
If approved, work with them to make a plan.
Review your plan regularly and make changes if needed.
It might seem tricky, but the NDIS can make a big difference in your life. Just reach out and they’ll guide you through it all.
